Boldness can be defined as not being fearful or hesitant in the face of possible danger. According to the Cambridge dictionary, it means a brave and confident way of behaving that shows no fear.
The phrase as bold as a lion is a common phrase. The Lion is known to be the King of the Jungle and He does not struggle with any other animal for territory. Other animals can’t dare to fight or even come close to it. The Lion is bold and fearless.
Boldness is one of the qualities a Christian should possess. Boldness should be authentic and not faked. If faked, could lead to disaster.
People take advantage of those who seem quiet and fearful, those that can’t defend themselves and waited on others to help them out.
One can be quiet and at the same time bold. In fact, I believe a number of bold people are actually quiet, they don’t talk much. There are cases where these group of people are mistaken as being weak and fearful because of their quietness.
An Illustration
I will use person A and B to illustrate my point further. Person B is the quiet and Bold person while person A uses his noise making to cover up his insecurities. Something happens and person A begins abusing Person B. B stays calm and cool listening to what A has to say.
When B notices that this is getting out of hand he begins to speak up then the tables turn. Some people enjoy frustrating others and taking advantage of them especially when they believe such a person is weak. In some cases, when the Spirit of God tells you to be quiet, it’s better to obey. Boldness should not be mistaken for rudeness, the two are totally different.
In order to be bold, one needs to know the truth. Be sure about what you are saying and defending. Defending something you know very little about is wrong and in a matter of time will backfire. If one is not sure about something, it’s better to be quiet than pretending to know. Some even cover up by acting bold, when the truth is revealed, one is not taken seriously.
Sources of Boldness
In order for one’s boldness to be authentic, it has to take its source in the Word of God. Knowing the truth about something makes you speak it out without fear. Every boldness requires a particular amount of wisdom in place and the Word of God is the bank for wisdom. When one studies the word of God frequently, this leads to a change in the way one sees things and reasons. This results in increased faith and confidence in God. When faith level rises, the same goes for boldness.
The second source of boldness is the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit empowers us with the Spirit of boldness. When you begin relating closely with the Holy Spirit, you become wiser, solving problems become easy. One’s words and input becomes fruitful and this results in one being confident which will end up translating into boldness.
How this applies to our daily lives
Using myself as an example although I’m still a work in progress. Before I got to this stage in my life, I used to be fearful, anxious, not wanting to face anybody’s wrath even though I was right etc. I began passing through series of tests and trials in my life then I realized I really needed someone that was strong who could deal with anyone that misbehaves at any point in time and at the same time helps me out.
I had the Spirit of God with me for quite some time but was never consciously aware of Him. When I began working consciously with Him, things changed. He made me understand the Word of God in a way I had never known before. The Spirit of God showed me easier ways of doing things (things that will normally take me hours would take only a few minutes). My rate of assimilation became faster and anytime I speak, people listen.
Furthermore, I noticed I could stand up to anyone and tell them the truth without having to twist it or hide under piles of lies. My boldness grew to another level but I don’t remember being accused of being rude.
Even with these changes, I became quiet and wouldn’t speak only if I need to.
Finally, boldness is one of the virtues that accompany one filled with the Spirit of God.
Before I end, there is something important I’ll like to add. It is important that you accept Jesus into your life if you haven’t and let Him be your personal Lord and Saviour. If you are in this category, join me in the salvation prayer.
SALVATION PRAYER
Lord Jesus, I come as a sinner, forgive me all my sins, cleanse me with your blood. I accept you today as my personal Lord and Saviour, I am free from all powers of sin, to serve the living God.
